Kapitlet vækker mindelser om Proust, hvilket litteraturkritikken synes at have overset.

George Sand and Autobiography

THESE EXTRACTS from Sand's autobiographical production has never before been published in danish. Hopefully they will be illustrative of Sand's wonderful abilities in this popular, though literary unheeded genre.

AS AN AUTOBIOGRAPHER GEORGE SAND WAS A TRUE MASTER. Winter in Majorca, 1841, is famous, telling us the story of Sand's journey during the winter of 1838-39, accompagnied by Chopin and her children Maurice and Solange, to this island which later on was to be overrun by the modern tourist.

STORY OF MY LIFE - Sand's autobiography - seems to be her most imposing work, 1854-55. Among the recollections of her adult life chapter twelve of the fourth part is particular important, as Sand tells us of her considerations in the autumn of 1830 where she finally decides to leave her husband and Nohant. In Paris she would try to make her way as an artist. The pastel, probably shown for the first time in the first volume of Karenine's biography, 1899, is a selfportrait from this period, and among other creative arts it was actually as a portraitpainter that Sand initially imagined to make her livelihood.

THE SECOND PART OF THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY, CHAPTER ELEVEN, contains Sand's account of her early childhood in a modest soldier's home in Paris. This marvel should remind us of Proust; a fact that literay criticism seems to have overlooked. The first half of the first chapter of her autobiography, in which Sand's tells us of her motivations for writing the autobiography, is also found among the extracts on this site. Sand's entire autobiography is available in the excellent english group translation from 1991, Thelma Jurgrau being the editor and published by The State University of New York Press.

LETTERS FROM A TRAVELLER was partly written during Sand's stay in Venice in the spring of 1834. The first letter is clearly a masterpiece, moving the modern reader with its refined style and the revelation of the spirit of romantic man.

VENICE is one of the fragments which was to be published posthumous. A part of Sketches and Hints this short but absolutely lovely poem in prose is Sand's declaration of love to Venice, where she experienced some happiness and so much sorrow.

JOURNAL INTIME of November 1834 is also to be strongly recommended; the diary Sand wrote under the impression of one of her violent ruptures with Musset. The DetGS translation is accompagnied by an introduction, in short telling the tempestous relation between Sand and Musset. Journal intime has seen quite a number of publications since the first of 1926; a few in english.
